Old Lahaina Fort
History &
Information
Once covering an area of about one acre, with 20 foot walls,
now all that remains is a small section of the southwest
corner. The reconstructed remains of one old wall still
stands at this old lockup. Sailors visiting Lahaina objected
to the missionary ban on native women visiting their ships.
They fired off cannons in protest. A fort was built in
1831-1832 out of coral blocks that were hewn by hand, in
which to incarcerate rowdy sailors and others who disobeyed
the new laws inspired by the influence of the missionaries.
The building collapsed 70 years later, leaving portions of
the wall only and the four cannons used to protect the site.
