OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Founded in
1832 and built in 1855, this rural church
sits on a tranquil oceanside site in the
town of Makena. The walls of this Protestant
church are 3-feet thick and made of lava
using coral as mortar. The Hawaiians planted
ti plants around the church, which according
to custom, provides protection from evil.
The church sits on a beautiful, sandy cove
and overlooks the ocean. In the small
cemetery on the grounds are numerous, old
headstones. Many of the headstones have
ceramic photographic portraits of the
deceased. |
