History &
Information
As
you approach Hana town on the Hana Highway, 1.0 mile beyond
`Ula`ino Rd., watch for the turnoff for the 120 acre
Waianapanapa State Park to appear makai. Drive very slowly
here as local children and pets walk the narrow road. Signs
will direct you to the famous and very photo-worthy black
sand beach, its dramatic and unique setting among black lava
cliffs and little ebony islands contrasting against
brilliant green beach naupaka and the white sea foam of
crashing waves. A footpath here begins just west of the
campground and guides us one quarter mile past two black
pebble beaches (if you're barefoot, watch out for stinging
Portuguese Man '0' War bladders, looking like little
purple-tinged transparent balloons) through the tropical
vegetation to Waianapanapa and Waiomao caves. These two
seaside lava tubes are filled with fresh crystalline waters
and are said to be connected. Honokalani Black Sand Beach
looks out on a natural sea arch out on the point. Here
begins the King's Highway foot trail, which closely follows
the shore for 3 miles/5 km to Hana.
At Waianapanapa you can rent housekeeping cabins, which come
fully equipped and are some of the
cheapest vacation digs anywhere in the world. They are
priced on a sliding scale per person. Housekeeping cabins
similar to these are also located elsewhere on Maui, and on
Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island, and consist of units with a
kitchen-living room, a bathroom and from one to three
bedrooms. Each unit is completely furnished with bedroom and
kitchen furniture, electric range, refrigerator, hot shower,
bedding, linen, towels, dishes and cooking and eating
utensils. Although not needed here, fireplaces or electric
heating are provided in cold mountain areas, like Maui's
Poli Poli Springs and Haleakala Crater. It might not be the
Hotel Hana Maui, but hey, at about 2% of that hotel's cost,
you've got a comfortable place to lay your head. Plan to
reserve well in advance and bring your B complex vitamins
(said to make you less appetizing to mosquitoes) and plenty
of insect repellent. Contact the Dept. of State Parks at 54
S. High St., Wailuku, Maui, HI 96793 for information,
up-to-the-minute prices, and reservations. Also write to the
Division of Forestry and Wildlife at the same address for a
copy of the Island Of Maui Recreation Map.
Legend Of The Waianapanapa Caves
Waianapanapa
Cave north of Hana on the island of Maui is the site of an
ancient murder. A young chieftess named Popoalaea caught the
eye of a powerful older warrior chief named Kakae and became
his wife. Over time, Kakae became suspicious that his
beautiful young wife was unfaithful and he beat her and made
her life miserable. With her faithful female companion, she
fled. The cave has a pool of water hiding the entrance and
it is necessary to dive into the pool to get under the ledge
to get to the large lava tube cavern. They hid during days
and came out at night to forage for food and figure out how
to escape the island. Kakae kept getting angrier as he
searched for his wife with a number of his men. One day he
arrived at the pool where they were hiding and caught a
glimpse of their reflection in the water. Kakae and his men
killed the two women. It's said that the waters foamed, the
women’s blood darkened the rocks in the cavern; and on the
nights of Ku when the night is darkest, the waters of the
cave turn red. In the spring, the time the tragedy occurred,
the gathering of the red opae-ula make the stones of the
cave turn even redder.
