Connect With Nature at the Hawaii Nature Center!
The Hawai'i Nature Center is dedicated to: Fostering
awareness, appreciation and understanding of Hawai'i and its
natural environment Teaching Hawaii's young people about
their environment Encouraging wise stewardship of precious
Island ecosystems Providing a unique and educational
experience for visitors to the Islands Since their modest
beginnings more than 800,000 children and adults have
participated in environmental education programs at the
Hawai'i Nature Center. They are recognized as the only
organization in the State of Hawai'i solely dedicated to
educating island children about their unique environment in
the out-of-doors.
In addition to their school programs the Nature Center
provides nature education programs for families and adults
on weekends. These include guided interpretive hikes, nature
adventures, earth care projects, and more. Their weekend and
community programs have reached more than 25,000 island
families a year on O'ahu and Maui.
By gently encouraging our young stewards to develop a
respect for microscopic life and towering trees, we are
confident that when these children become leaders and
decision-makers, they will impress upon their community the
importance of protecting their home environment.
On O'ahu and Maui, the Hawai'i Nature Center offers:
Hands-on field programs for preschool
through 5th grade Community programs for
children and adults Guided hikes for
residents and visitors.
In 1992 their first neighbor island facility opened on Maui in
'Iao Valley. This facility, as well as a wetland field site
at Kealia Pond, now serves more than sixty percent of Maui
County's elementary school students each year. In addition,
the recently renovated 'Iao Valley facility was acquired in
perpetuity for environmental education, and
now boasts an Interactive Nature Museum with
more than 30 hands-on exhibits emphasizing
the natural history of the Hawaiian Islands.
With a change in the attitudes of children toward nature,
the future of the environment stands a chance. Whether it be
delicate ohia flowers, ferns sparkling with raindrops, taro
sprouting from a pond, or children thrilled after
discovering something, the Hawaii Nature Center thrives on
every small detail to help educate future adults.
