Travel to Maui
Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are the 2 main carriers serving
Kahului airport. They each have flights from Honolulu to
Maui virtually every hour during the day and evening.
American, United and Delta all serve Maui from several
different US airports. From outside the USA, Air Canada is
the only international air carrier offering direct service
to Maui. They fly from Vancouver to Maui several times a
week during the winter season. Flight time to Maui from the
West Coast of Canada and the U.S. is about 5 hours.
When to come? November and December are the most crowded and
most expensive. Summer is the hottest time and a good time
for families. Spring and Fall are least crowded and best
times to get a package deal.
Good stuff is spread out all over the island, so you'll want
a car. Be sure to reserve one before you come. Ask about an
AAA or AARP discount if you are a member. Ask your hotel
about a package that includes a car. Pick up a free map at
the airport. And, if nobody is meeting you, buy yourself a
plumeria lei at the airport shop. The fragrance will remind
you why you're here. Keep it in the refrigerator and it will
last for days.
How to transfer from Maui Airport to Kaanapali
Taxi is expensive ($50) and price for the airport shuttle is similar. A
rental car booked in advance is probably the best solution
price-wise and for convenience sake too.
How to transfer from Maui airport to Kihei
Taxi is about $25, and airport shuttle van is about the same.
Maui Weather
In one word: great. Like the other islands in the chain, the western side
is mostly dry and sunny year-round, while the eastern part
receives greater amounts of rainfall. December to March is
when the island gets most of its precipitation, and the
occasional storm. Temperatures are consistent in the range
of 28 to 31 Celsius ( 84 to 88 Fahrenheit) for daytime
highs, with evenings cooler but very comfortable. To sum it
all up: Best time for a Maui vacation – anytime! If
you are going up to the top of a 10,000 foot mountain in the
morning you're looking at about 35 degrees. Even during an
afternoon trip you're looking at 50 degrees. It is a lot
cooler over here than one would believe. Add in the wind
chill factor and it's down right cold. Bring a pair of long
pants (some restaurants require them), a sweater, jacket,
close-toed shoes, both tennis and dress and a good pair of
socks. You will need them on both the horseback riding and
bike tours.
When you first arrive your body clock is going to be a
little messed up. You'll find yourself waking up at some
pretty strange hours of the morning for the first few days.
This might be the best time for you to do an activity that
leaves at an ungodly hour like one of the sunrise bike
tours. Either that or you can sit in the lobby and watch
them wax the floor.
The wind and the cloud cover will always come in like
clockwork later on in the day. If your planning on doing a
helicopter or boating adventure it is a good idea to book
one of the morning trips for either of these trips. These
are by far the most popular times for both the snorkeling
and helicopter trips. The morning trips are the hardest
trips to get reservations on.
Kids are more than welcome on most of the activities except
for a few. The bike companies require that they be at least
12 years old. The horseback companies, except for a couple
will not allow riders under the age of 18. Some activities
are a little more kid friendly than others, just ask the
activity company there policy on kids.
