OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Hookipa Beach
Park, located on Maui’s famous Hana Highway,
is world-renowned for its windsurfing and
other ocean sport activities. It’s one of
the best beaches in the world for
windsurfing and two world-class competitions
take place here each year.
Visit this beach during the Aloha Classic or
Red Bull contests to catch some of the best
surfers in the world. Several other water
sport competitions are held here annually –
just check with local hotels or visitor
spots for a list of calendar events.
At this popular cliff-lined beach, surfers
come from all corners of the earth to ride
the unique break. The waves can be sizeable
and the currents challenging, so novice
surfing is discouraged. Spectators can watch
surfers and windsurfers from an elevated
overlook point.
Hookipa Beach is complemented by the
presence of a large coral reef area that
tames incoming waves, so when the surf is
not that strong, swimming and snorkeling are
possible. In the winter months, the waves
can reach heights of 15 feet and more.
The beach itself is little more than a strip
of white sand behind a wide, rocky shelf.
The near shore ocean bottom is a mixture of
reef and patches of sand. Because of this,
the main water activities are windsurfing,
surfing and fishing. |

PLEASE NOTE |
|
| |
|
|
| |
While
Hawaii's beaches can bring much enjoyment,
it is always a good practice to use common
sense while visiting them. Please be aware
of the wave & wind conditions before going
into the water. Mornings are usually best
for swimming, snorkeling or diving. Have
respect for the strength of the waves and be
aware that high surf can come up at any
time. NEVER turn your back to the ocean.
Be careful when exploring any rocky
shorelines. Waves can crash on the rocks and
knock you over easily, and the rocks may
also be sharp when walking on them.
When snorkeling or scuba diving, please have
respect for ocean life, and remember that
the coral reef is alive too. Avoid standing
on or touching if at all possible. |
