Mike Severns Diving
-
They view diving as a
fun, relaxing,
intellectually and
spiritually fulfilling
endeavor. Therefore they
have no arbitrary time
limit on the dives and
they travel very slowly
underwater, wanting you
to see and
experience as much as
possible. You are free
to dive with one of
them, having them show
you creatures and
behaviors they know well
or be off a-ways in your
own world. You will not
hear them banging on
their tanks underwater,
see them herding people
around or chasing and
harassing marine life.
They're here to
accompany you on an
adventure that they hope
will become one of your
cherished diving
memories.
Started in 1979, Mike
Severns Diving has
become known for taking
small groups of
comfortable certified
divers to both popular
and off-the-beaten-path
areas for truly
educational,
personalized diving.
Diving in Hawaii is
strikingly different
from diving in many
other parts of the world
(fully a quarter of the
marine life can be found
only in Hawaii!) and an
experienced guide can
make a world of
difference. Their crew
is very experienced and
safety conscious, and
they put no restrictions
on dive time as long as
computers and air allow.
They typically do
two-tank boat dives off
of Molokini and Maui and
the divers (and the
weather)
determine exactly where
they will dive on any
given day. When they
have people who have
been diving with them
before, of course they
try to make sure they
see different places.
They cater to
photographers in that
they have photography
experience themselves
and know what subjects
photographers are likely
to want and what they
cannot photograph in
other parts of the
world. Because they
travel slowly
underwater,
photographers have time
to spend with the
animals instead of
trying to keep up with a
group covering as much
terrain as possible.
They can't say enough
about the photography
opportunities in Hawaii.
They are superb, both
above and below water.
And if you come during
humpback whale season,
you can add them to your
list of subjects! |

Two
Tank Dive |

|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
 |
|
These are 2-tank boat dives for
certified divers and the
locations of the actual dives
are always determined in the
morning depending on the
interests of the divers and on
the weather. They do not take
snorkelers.
Time:
Meeting time is normally 6:15
AM; however, from Sept.-Dec.
they are meeting at 5:45 AM due
to harbor dredging and their
requirement that all boats be
launched early. They return
between 11:30 and 12:30. If
you're wondering why they meet
so early, the almost daily
tradewinds start to pick up
around 11:30 or 12:00 and this
allows them to be underwater or
on their way home when they
start.
The Boat:
Pilikai (embrace the sea) is a
38-foot painted aluminum Munson
with twin 300 hp engines,
hard-top sun roof, head, broad
swim platform, ladders designed
especially for divers wearing
fins, and loads of deck space. A
fresh water shower is available
for rinsing off and for rinsing
cameras. They take twelve divers
on the boat; however, the divers
are split into two groups of six
for a peaceful, uncrowded
experience underwater.
Dive Equipment:
They offer ScubaPro BC's and
ScubaPro regulators with
computers. They have 3mm or 5mm
wetsuits depending on your size
(3mm for people over about 145
pounds and 5mm for people less
than about 145 pounds who chill
more easily). Water temperature
varies from 74 degrees F (24
degrees Celsius) in Jan, Feb,
Mar to 80 degrees F (27 degrees
Celsius) in July, Aug, Sept.
There is no thermocline. Unless
you weigh more then 200 pounds
or are very warm blooded, don't
even THINK of wearing just a
fleece dive skin!
Safety:
Safety is a high priority. In
their twenty-eight years of
operation they are
accident-free. They carry a high
quality oxygen system and all
crew are well-trained in its
use. All crew are also current
in CPR and first aid. VHF radios
and a cellular phone are
on-board for communication.
Food:
Kona blend coffee, hot chocolate
(in the winter), fresh pastries,
fruit, juice, soda and snacks
are provided.

Aloha Friday 3-Tank Dive
This is a three-tank dive that
they do on some Fridays for more
experienced divers. There is a
maximum of 10 divers on the boat
(divided into 2 groups) and, as
always, the dives are chosen in
the morning. The day may include
drift diving, deeper diving,
exploratory diving or diving
less frequently dived sites. A
few times a year, when the ocean
is calm, they make a group
decision in the morning to do a
long run to the island of Lanai
or Molokai and then they just do
a 2-tank dive.
Time:
They meet at 6:15 AM and they
return between 1:30 and 2:30.
Food: Coffee, hot
chocolate, pastries, juice,
fresh organic fruit, sandwiches,
sodas, snacks.
You must be certified and
have been diving at least a year
and BE TOTALLY COMFORTABLE in
the water. |
