OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
For all its natural beauty, Lanai Island is
not exactly known for its tourist
infrastructure. Although that hasn’t
deterred tourists, it certainly makes
lodging a challenge for first-time visitors.
There is only one legally recognized site
for Lanai camping, the Hulopoe Beach Park,
and access is mostly private since there’s
no bus service in the area.
Perhaps the best thing about Hulopoe is its
cost-at $5 a night, it fits the budget of
most island visitors. The shaded picnic
areas are perfect for leisurely meals al
fresco, offering a nice view of the beach
and the famous Lanai greenery. It’s no
five-star hotel, but it perfectly channels
the laid-back charm of the Hawaiian islands.
If you’re looking for something more
high-end, you can hop over to Manele Bay
Hotel, a luxury facility just past the
Hulopoe shoreline.
Besides its lodging, the park is also known
as one of the most scenic spots on Lanai. It
lies on the south-east coast of the island,
facing clear blue waters and sporting
pristine golden sand on its beach. Tourists
come in regularly to swim and sunbathe, and
the nearby reserve attracts marine
enthusiasts from all over the world.
There are currently six campsites in Hulopoe,
each one housing around six people-a rather
limited capacity given the amount of tourist
traffic in Lanai. As you might expect, there
is a rather high demand for accommodation,
so it’s highly recommended that you reserve
two to three weeks ahead. Try to book
earlier during the summer and Christmas
seasons, when tourism is particularly heavy. |
