OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Located directly on Maluaka Beach, which is
considered one of Maui's finest and a
popular wedding site, the Makena Beach &
Golf Resort is an exceptionally lovely
resort. On one side is the Pacific Ocean
with its allure of crystal blue waters,
Humpback whales in the winter months,
fantastic snorkeling across the water at
Molokini Island and the unforgettable
experience of swimming with giant sea
turtles. Behind the resort are the foothills
of the famed Haleakala Crater and directly
south is a wilderness state park, including
a great beach for snorkeling.
The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is secluded
and away from the other resorts on this
section of the coast. The hotel was built
around an Asian meditation garden with stone
paths, waterfalls, streams and ponds filled
with gold and red Koi (Carp) and private
corners for meditation. The doors of every
room open to this garden while the windows
and lanais look out upon the ocean. The
grounds surrounding the hotel are immaculate
with lush green lawns, trees and lounge
chairs. Upon arrival guests receive a shell
lei and cold oshibori (damp scented towel)
to refresh yourself from your travels.
The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is unique in
owning their own golf course, designed by
Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Guests of the hotel
receive discounted green fees. The hotel
also has a putting green, 6 Plexipave tennis
courts (2 lit for night play), badminton,
shuffleboard, croquet and volleyball courts.
There is both a children's swimming pool and
a medium sized pool with large sun deck and
lounges (the hotel has free cabanas by the
pool, first come, first served) and two
whirlpools. And then there is the beach. You
can swim with turtles, snorkel with exotic
tropical fish, take an outrigger canoe ride,
a kayak eco tour or you can simply float on
your back and watch the clouds go by.
There are various dining choices at the
hotel, including the Molokini Bar and
Grille, featuring contemporary island
cuisine. Hakone is an excellent Japanese
restaurant with both a traditional menu and
a tropical menu. For casual open air dining
for breakfast and lunch there is Cafe Kiowai
and the Makena Clubhouse Restaurant - great
place for cocktails and appetizers while
watching fantastic sunsets.
Try not to miss the Sunday Champagne Brunch,
voted by the Maui News for 6 consecutive
years as the "Best Brunch in Maui". If you
don't want to wander away from the sun by
the pool, the Poolside Snack Bar is the spot
for light lunches and icy cocktails, or stop
off at the Molokini Lounge for a sunset
cocktail and appetizers with nightly
entertainment. Two nights a week, the hotel
is host to a Luau with an
all-you-can-eat-buffet and wonderful
Polynesian show.
The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is an older
hotel, so if you are looking for the very
latest in swimming pools and fitness centers
and bathrooms with spa tubs and intend to
spend most of your time in your room or
around a swimming pool, you might consider
somewhere else. If you are instead looking
for a serene, relaxing atmosphere, excellent
service and an absolutely wonderful
location, it would be hard to beat the
Makena Beach & Golf Resort. It is ideal for
both the more active traveler who wants to
explore tide pools, swim with sea turtles,
take nature hikes and do some serious
snorkeling and yet just as ideal for the
traveler who appreciates serenity, walks
along the beach and sunsets. |
